Wholly Real
U prvim nam danima travnja trg ispred Doma hrvatskih likovnih umjetnika postaje javni prostor. Vraća se poslije zime u oblik agore, sastajališta, mjesta vijećanja, prosudbi i protesta. Sunce pravde nadvladava tamu zimskim solsticijem, ponovo rođenim suncem u mračnom prosincu. Proljetna ravnodnevnica konačna je pobjeda sunca i predstavlja vrhunac aktivnih sila u hodu kroz godinu. Prostor u kojem živimo simbole je prirodne ravnoteže, rasta, nestanka i nastanka utkao u kršćansku simboliku vremena Uskrsa. Zbog svega smo toga u ovo blagdansko vrijeme u Domu hrvatskih likovnih umjetnika odlučili predstaviti svećenika, povjesničara umjetnosti i umjetnika iz nama bliskog Graza Hermanna Glettlera. U baroknoj se crkvi St Andrea tik uz klasične štajerske oltare i plastiku nalaze instalacije i umjetničke intervencije Otta Zitka, Markusa Wilflinga, Gustava Trogera i drugih. Uz same intervencije u crkvi i van nje otac Hermann organizira predavanja, prezentacije i produkciju umjetničkih radova.

Wholly Real
In the first days of April the square in front of the Croatian Association of Artists becomes a public space. It comes back after winter in the form of agora, a meeting place, place of discussion, criticism and demonstration. The Sun of Justice overpowers the darkness with its winter solstice, with the reborn sun in the dark December. The spring equinox is the final victory of the sun and it represents the peak of active forces in their journey through the year. The space in which we live interweaved the symbols of natural balance, growth, disappearance and creation with the Christian symbolism, the time of Easter. Because of all that we have decided, at this festive time, to represent a priest, art historian and artist from the nearby Graz, Hermann Glettler, in the Croatian Association of Artists. For a number of years Father Hermann Glettler has led the Parish of St Andrew in Graz, where he has, as a curator, realized numerous projects in the media of contemporary art. In the baroque church of St. Andrew, right next to classical Styrian altars and sculptures, there are also installations and artistic interventions by Otto Zitko, Markus Wilfling, Gustav Troger and others. Together with the interventions in the church and around it, Father Hermann also organizes lectures, presentations and production of artworks. His activity is based on the relationship between the Catholic Church and visual arts that lasted for centuries and was completely in opposition with traditionally unchangeable Byzantine aesthetics or ascetic iconoclastic Protestant postulates. Although in one moment it seemed that in the twentieth century the relationship between the Church and contemporary art was lost and that art was completely secularized, much deeper connections than the historical ones emerged. Contemporary art has partly linked with not only the Catholic spirituality, but it also directly referred to Church liturgy, as was the case with Viennese Actionism. The following examples should also be mentioned chronologically; the famous Chapelle du Rosaire de Vence, Le Corbusier’s Chapelle Notre Dame du Haut and work of a Jesuit monk from Koln, Friedhelm Mennekes. Unfortunately, in the Croatian culture space since the end of the World War II relationships between Church and contemporary artistic practices have been more than weak, maybe even non-existent. Only in the last couple of years can we trace the attempts of some authors who work within new visual media to directly or indirectly refer to the topics of Christian iconography or create works in some way related to the Catholic Church. We are therefore extremely content and honoured to present the new work of Hermann Gettler in Bačva Gallery in the Croatian Association of Artists. Because, as the poet once said “you see but your shadow when you turn your back to the sun”.
