Projections are separated by the stone paved reconstruction of seafront in center of which the 9 m² model of Greeting to the Sun is installed. The model is connected with actual location in Zadar in real time via Internet. The pavilion echoes with the sound of Sea Organ and sounds of Zadar’s Riva recreating the original ambience to the visitors of Biennale.

Sea Organ

The sea organ has the shape of a flight of steps leading to the sea, inducing people to change their walking pattern, to stop and come down to the sea. Under the stone steps, divided into seven 10-meter sections, there are polyethylene tubes of various sizes. The air, pushed by waves, flows from wider to narrower tubes, accelerating and producing sound in the pipes located in the resonating cavity below the promenade, with mystical openings in the stone letting out the sound. The instrument has seven clusters with five selected tones each, derived from the matrix of the traditional Dalmatian a cappella singing. As the energy of the sea is unpredictable in the endless cycles of high and low tide, of the size, force and direction of waves, this eternal concert is always different in its infinite musical variations, composed and played by nature itself.

The sea organ in Zadar is just one of many projects undertaken by this millennial city to have a continuous culture of public space. Along with promoting the development of urban culture, this artistic installation is also an eminent tourist project. This is attested by the fact that the sea organ, immediately after the construction, turned into a metaphorical site visited by delighted citizens, an essential stop in all tourist routes through Zadar and its region. Greeting to the Sun

The Greeting to the Sun is a circular glazed surface with 22 m of diameter, situated on the seafront pavement, and one can walk on it. It is equipped with photo-voltaic plates, with a grid of light points underneath, consisting of a dispersed display with over 10.000 tiny light bulbs. A computer induces the change of intensity and colour of light of each single bulb. In fact, this is an installation that can emanate light in all of its possible sensations, send messages, form graphemes, write words. One can approach this dynamic light spectacle that brings you physically into an immaterial environment with a sensation of swimming or soil moving under your feet. The installation absorbs the energy of the sun and turns it into a play of light. The same energy is to be used for the general illumination of the seafront making the Greeting to the Sun a device for the production of energy from alternative sources.
