Carte Blanche: PM
Boris Cvjetanović’s photos of the PM Gallery 1981-1991
17.2.-14.3.2009.
The exhibition Carte Blanche: PM is conceived as a project which should offer new readings and interpretation of the legacy of the 70s in institutional and artistic practices, referring to the local context and more precisely to the PM Gallery. As the activities of the gallery are linked to the end of the artistic production of the so called New Artistic Practices, it seemed very important to show the chronicle of the first PM as the conceptual forerunner of the existing gallery.
The idea of showing Boris Cvjetanovic’s photos of the so-called “first PM” came out from the discussion between the actual curator of the gallery Ana Janevski and the artist Mladen Stlinovic. Considering that Mladen Stilinovic was the first responsible person of the gallery, which mainly functioned as a self-organized space, and Cvjetanović was as an active participator and observer, it seemed as an important beginning of the new gallery programme.
Cvjetanovic photos, since now only published in the book „_PM_20 tewenty years 1981-2001“, are no photos of exhibition displays, but more backstage scenes of gallery’s activities. Portraits, group photos, accidental situations, show the liveliness and the atmosphere of the 80’s, the time when the gallery was a centre of experimental strategies in visual arts, inclined to critical and new media perspectives in artistic productions, always promoting and supporting innovations and challenges to traditional categories of art making.
