5TH CROATIAN PRINTS TRIENNIAL

Half a century of continuity /1960-2009/

(1st Zagreb Prints Exhibition – Yugoslav Biennial – 5th Croatian Prints Triennial)

Press conference: Dom HDLU, 8 June at noon

Exhibition opening: Dom HDLU, 9 June at 8 p.m.

The 5th Croatian Prints Triennial will be held at the Dept. of Prints and Drawings, the Studio of the Dept. of Prints and Drawings, and the Home of the Croatian Association of Artists (Dom HDLU) on the Žrtava fašizma Square (Ring Gallery, PM Gallery, the park).

Ring Gallery / Invited and chosen authors

The list of invited authors (44) has been composed according to reputation, authority and importance of print artists. Apart from the doyens of print art, younger artists, who had achieved success or been awarded prizes for their work at national or international prints biennials or triennials, have been invited as well.

Among 106 candidates, the art jury chose 40 authors, among them many young, yet non-affirmed artists.

PM Gallery / Subversion of the collective (un) conscience

Exhibition prepared by the curator Ružica Pepelko comments, using the prints media, on the current social events and the critical views of the social phenomena. In an original manner, nine chosen artists speak of the current moment. Print artists are at the same time witnesses of their time, asking questions, offering answers, provoking and protesting in the community they belong to.

Dept. of Prints and Drawings / A Dialogue: Algorithmic Art and Constructive Systems

Thanks to new technologies, engineers and scientists, who create by using mathematical knowledge and computer programs, have entered the field of print art. Božo Beck and his associates presented this phenomenon in Zagreb in the Galleries of the City of Zagreb (New tendencies 3-5 / 1968-1973.).

The curator Vesna Kedmenec Križić has further made this phenomenon topical and added it a personal touch in the exhibition entitled A Dialogue: Algorithmic Art and Constructive Systems, aiming at indicating to the level it has reached in the contemporary Croatian print art.

Studio of the Dept. of Prints and Drawings / Mirjana Vodopija

Mirjana Vodopija, the Academy Prize Winner at the 4th Croatian Prints Triennial, continues, in her one-person exhibition mounted at the Studio of the Dept. of Prints and Drawings, developing her artistic preoccupations by intertwining photography and video. In her multimedia project, she presents her artistic perspective through light, web and composition, inviting us to join the process of print-art-wise thinking.

Park HDLU / Accompanying event

Installation by Siniša Reberski: Cvijet hrvatske grafike (the Croatian Prints Flower) as a venue for recognising, recalling, interaction of artists with audience, arts critics and prints admirers.

Despite the recession, the 5th Croatian Prints Triennial demonstrates various views, conceptions, visual arts poetics and print techniques, as justification for walking through the new era of media and communications. New, fresh generations of artists have entered the scene, and the balance among the active print artists of the Croatian east and west, and north and south has finally been established. Isn’t that a stimulus enough to analyse, present, follow and encourage their work in the decades to come?
