
DE/CONSTRUCTION OF PAINTING CONCEPT:
The project De/construction of Painting encourages and addresses contemporary artistic practices within the context of the visual arts center of Eastern Germany, Leipzig, which has transformed into a global hub for the arts with a focus on the painting scene. The former industrial complex Spinnerei in the Plagwitz district spans 10 hectares and has been almost entirely renovated, now serving as the heart of the local and international art scene with 12 galleries, the non-profit art center Halle 14, and around a hundred resident artists. The residency program De/construction of Painting tries to answer the following questions:
Part of this year’s residency program will take place within the EU project CreART 3.0, a European network of medium-sized cities aimed at exchanging experiences and best practices to promote contemporary art through a continuous transnational mobility program for emerging artists, curators, and cultural workers, in order to maximize the economic, social, and cultural contributions that creativity can bring to local communities. As part of the EU project CreART 3.0, 4 residencies will take place in Leipzig in 2024, each lasting 5 weeks, including 2 Croatian and 2 foreign artists from the network of cities.
OPEN CALL DESCRIPTION:
The Open call is aimed at artists from the CreArt network who address the aforementioned questions and primarily start from redefining the ideas of an image, in the medium of painting, but also in photography and video. The De/construction of Painting residency program closes the circle between artistic and research, opening doors to new considerations of the image. Two artists (one from Croatia and one from the CreArt network) share a workspace and a bathroom in one residency space simultaneously.
RESIDENCY DURATION: 5 weeks.

DESCRIPTION:
Karas Gallery is an exhibition space of the Croatian Association of Fine Artists (HDLU) with a long tradition of activity in the contemporary art scene. After many years of activity at Praška 4, since 2018, it has been operating at the address Kralja Zvonimira 58. Recognizing the need for redefining and creating a new cultural identity for the neighborhood where Karas Gallery is located, within the EU project CreART 3.0, a collaborative artistic program titled KARAS + KVART is organized, envisioned in a collaborative and co-creation model between one local artist and one artist from the network. Artists will explore the neighborhood for 2 weeks, and the final result will be an artistic work or initiative in the public space of the gallery neighborhood in October. As part of KARAS+KVART 2024 project, Luana Lojić has been invited to participate, and an international artist will be selected through an Open call.
Preference will be given to artists who are interested in and express themselves through innovative visual, auditory, multimedia, and research practices, or who contemplate the function and activation of public space, responding to the concept of the artist Luana Lojić, which is envisioned as a series of performative actions in the neighborhood in the format of a con-event, simulating cultural content. In its absence, the concept compensates with temporary and exaggerated performances in the form of film projections, spoken word poetry, parties (VJ/DJ session), podcasts, and dances that convince viewers that they are really happening (e.g., projection on a factory, podcast at the market, contemporary dance around and through the square, party in one of the vacant spaces, etc.). The artist imagines ‘scenes’ or ‘illusions’ unfolding simultaneously while the content’s focus is dispersed, and the theme plays with performance options and hallucinations of unused spaces and public areas. Fictional events would rely on confusion inductions (methods of verbalizing nonsense in a monotonous tone, used in hypnotherapy to put the rational part of the brain to sleep). Themes and formats, as well as additional collaborators and performances/scenes, would be developed in collaboration with the selected artist.
Luana Lojić (1991) deals with applied cosmophilia and internet nomadism. From poetry for stones to live installations, videos, films, voiceovers, and live art addressing the relationship between humans and the systems, perceptions, and materialities surrounding them, her work seeks to understand natural processes beyond and within the concept of senses. She has received numerous awards for her work.

On Tuesday, 2.4.2024. Antonio Kutleša opens his solo exhibition entitled Flowers That Have Not Bloomed, at 7 pm in Karas Gallery (Ulica kralja Zvonimira 58).

In her foreword, Ivana Završki emphasizes:
Maintaining a meticulous approach traditionally associated with historical periods of the appearance of graphics, but using modern technological tools at the same time, Antonio Kutleša, in his work Flowers That Have Not Bloomed, translates graphic drawing into a three-dimensional form without prior shaping of the objects in traditional sculptural techniques. The artist’s experiment, building upon his earlier work titled DIY 3D Printer from 2020, starts from the idea of problematizing the range of the drawing medium, intertwining disciplines, and using modern tools, taking us through a process of complete transformation – at the level of idea, medium, and experience of the creative process and its product.
Biography:
Antonio Kutleša was born in Zagreb in 1993. In September 2015, he enrolled in the graduate university study of fine arts, with majors in graphic arts and applied graphics, under the guidance of Prof. Ines Krasić. In 2018, he graduated with excellent success and was awarded by the Academic Council of the Academy of Fine Arts as one of the most successful graduates, earning the title of Master of Fine Arts Education. He exhibited at the 36th Youth Salon, where his work Jah Rana received the Kranjčar Gallery Award and a commendation from the 36th Youth Salon.

On Saturday, March 23, 2024, the “Weaving Techniques” workshop was held as part of the European project Artists for Artists Residency Network (AFAR).

The workshop was led by prof. Nikolina Knežević Hrgović, mag.art.edu., and the following participated: Larisa Crunţeanu (RO), Marta Dijak (HR), Anja Lückenkemper (DE), Samuel Matijević (HR) and Nika Šimičić (HR).

Weaving is the process of interlacing at least two systems of threads at right angles; warp and weft. With this process, we get flat or three-dimensional textile creations, depending on the weaving techniques we use. The application of hand weaving is very wide; from clothing items, home textiles, decorative elements, spatial installations, etc.
At the “Weaving Techniques” workshop, we delved into the secrets of this very old and respected craft. We learned something about the history of weaving in Croatia, got to know the parts of the loom and the loom, and what materials and tools are used in hand weaving. Each of the participants worked on their own weaving frame and learned the procedures of folk techniques whose traditions contemporary weavers try to maintain. We also mentioned some “newer” weaving techniques and how to connect tradition and contemporary artistic expression through the magic of threads.


The Artists for Artists Residency Network, a two-year project (2023-2024), aims to improve the mobility of contemporary visual artists and curators, while creating greater opportunities for women in the arts. The project takes place in four European partner countries – Romania, Germany, Croatia and Austria. The project focuses on the development of new international exchanges and transcultural dialogue and provides a number of new opportunities for art practitioners of all ages, in different artistic media, with a special emphasis on women in art and gender equality. The result of the project will be increased awareness of the importance of cultural mobility at local legislative levels, but also in the general public, especially in the current (post)crisis European context, strengthening EU affiliation and connection with contemporary visual art.
The project includes: 12 artist residencies in Zagreb (HR), Mulhouse (FR), Bucharest (RO) and in Săcel, Maramureș (RO), 4 curatorial residencies in Zagreb and Bucharest, 12 conferences in Zagreb, Bucharest and Vienna and 1 traveling international exhibition, which will first be shown to the public in Zagreb (HR), and then in Vienna (AT) and Bucharest (RO).

Opening of the exhibition TEXT AS AN OBJECT – group exhibition of Slovenian and Croatian artists will be on Friday, March 22, 2024 at 7pm, at PM Gallery (Home of HDLU / Meštrović pavilion).

From Josip Zanki’s introduction text we emphasize:
“ The collaborative exhibition project between the Fine Artists Society (Društvo likovnih umetnikov) from Ljubljana and the Croatian Association of Fine Artists (Hrvatsko društvo likovnih umjetnika), titled Text as an Object, takes as a starting point selected works from both artistic practices that illustrate, deconstruct, expand, and transform text into an image and an object. The selected works use various contemporary artistic media and practices, ranging from drawings and artist’s books to research methods. Text, as well as language, be it Slovenian or Croatian, represents, conceptualizes, and creates new meanings. (…)
The exhibition Text as an Object represents an international reciprocal collaboration that includes an exhibition of Slovenian and Croatian artists at the Extended Media Gallery in the Meštrović Pavilion (Home of the Croatian Association of Fine Artists) and a reciprocal exhibition at the Gallery of the Fine Artists Society in Ljubljana (in March and April 2024). The curator of the Slovenian part of the exhibition, Nadja Gnamuš, has selected works by the artists Nina Čelhar, Tanja Lažetić, and Aleksandra Saška Gruden, as well as works by the artists Boris Beja and Ištvan Išt Huzjan. The coordinator of the Croatian part of the exhibition, Josip Zanki, has selected works by the artists Zorana Unković, Mija Maraković, Mihaela Rašica, and Antonela Šurbek, as well as the artist Željko Beljan. Slovenian and Croatian artists raise questions about text and language through their works, playing with the content of the text, transforming text into an image or object, employing lettering and the art of writing as an image of text, or simply referring to a specific literary work in their pieces. Thus, a dialogue is opened directly within the text, or language, which is often the cause of conflict, whether in translation or interpretation. ”

Opening of the exhibition NORTH EAST SOUTH WEST NORTH by DAMIR SOBOTA will be on Friday, March 22, 2024 at 7pm, at Bačva Gallery (Home of HDLU / Meštrović pavilion).

In his foreword, Mladen Lučić emphasizes:
“ The new series of works by Damir Sobota, presented at the Bačva Gallery of the Croatian Association of Fine Artists (HDLU), represents a logical continuation of his previous explorations characterized by a unique approach to questioning the concept and nature of the painting. It is paradoxical in relation to this claim that Sobota does not paint using techniques and materials that conform to the established definition of painting; instead, he uses the collage technique to reexamine these concepts. Using, conditionally speaking, the language of geometric art, the artist emphasizes a non-narrative artistic language close to minimalism and the principles of primary and analytical painting. In doing so, he corresponds with the period of the 1970s when painting found itself at an almost zero point due to the dominance of conceptual art. Sobota’s previous work is, in a way, based on a kind of conceptual process, evident in his conceptual approach to solving painting problems exclusively through the collage process. He insists on the process as an artistic category, equalizing the meaning of the final product with the very process of creating the work. This process involves not only the physical but also the mental aspect, crucial for the proper perception of the artist’s works. (…) ”
Biography:
Damir Sobota (1988, Zagreb)
Graduated in 2013 from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, majoring in Graphics. He has exhibited his works in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including Studio Tommaseo, Trieste Contemporanea, Trieste (2022), Institute of Contemporary Art, Zagreb (2021), Radoslav Putar Award, Salon Galić, Split (2020), Palindrome, Lauba/U10, Zagreb/Belgrade (2020/2021), Known Unknowns, Westpol A.I.R. Space, Leipzig (2019), 11th HT Award, Museum of Contemporary Art, Zagreb (2018), and several editions of the Biennial of Painting, Zagreb (from 2013 to 2021).
He participated in a residency program in Germany and the USA. Residency Unlimited – New York (2021), Hafenkombinat – Leipzig (2017, 2018).
He is the recipient of the “Radoslav Putar” Award for the year 2020, as well as the Croatian Association of Fine Artists’ Award for Young Artist for the year 2017. He is a member of the Croatian Association of Fine Artists (HDLU) and the Croatian Association of Independent Artists (HZSU). He works as an external associate at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. He lives and works in Zagreb.
